At 5:33 PM CDT yesterday (2 Sep 2020) I glanced up and saw a Common Nighthawk
overhead. Thinking that the annual nighthawk migration had arrived, I spent a
full hour checking the skies over the woods in rural Cumberland County. I
finished the hour at 6:33 PM (sunset at 7:07 PM) with 62 nighthawks (assuming
there were no repeats). As usual, they were silent, usually alone or in small
loose groups, and showed little to no response to recordings sent up to several
of them. Most were heading southeast.
I assume the skies will be worth checking again the next few evenings.
