Ok. So, once I install the components, where can I get more voices for both Sapi 5 and microsoft speech platform? If I was using the Mac version, where would I get voices?

Hi Jessica,

The voice that I set up to speak the menu items, folders, and files on your player is Zira Pro. The voice and talk files were created using
the Rockbox Utility which is included in your player's Utilities
folder. This is not a SAPI5 voice, so you can't use RBClip to create talk files with it unless you have Windows 8 or above on which Zira
Pro is one of the available SAPI5 voices.

The audio tutorial called "Voice and talk files creation with the
Rockbox Utility.mp3" inside the Tutorials folder shows you how to use the Rockbox Utility to create a different voice and to generate talk files for your folders and files, so you can have the same voice speak
everything on your player.

To use the Microsoft Speech Platform voices, you'll need to install
two components from Microsoft on your computer:

*Microsoft Speech Platform - Runtime (Version 11), x86. Note that you
must install the x86 version even if your system is 64 bit:

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=27225

* The file named MSSpeech_TTS_en-US_ZiraPro.msi.

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=27224

This page includes many files for both speech recognition and text-to-
speech. Choose the files containing the TTS data for the desired
languages/voices. For example, the file MSSpeech_TTS_en-US_ZiraPro.msi is a U.S. English voice. You don't need to install the MSSpeech_SR MSI
files, as those aren't voices, but speech recognition files.

The Rockbox Utility on the PC side of things supports two useful types
of voices, SAPI5 and the Microsoft Speech Platform 11 voices.

The voices on the Mac are different from those on the PC. You can
download the Mac version of the Rockbox Utility by following this
link:
http://download.rockbox.org/rbutil/macosx/RockboxUtility-v1.4.0.d
mg

Apparently the setting was changed on your player regarding which
files to show. Here's how to change the setting back.

01. Navigate to files, don't click to enter it, instead hold down
select until the menu pops up.
02. Navigate to show files and click select.
03. Navigate to supported and click select.
04. Click the left button until you return to the main menu.

HTH,

Laz

Ok. I have Windows XP like you. Where can I here samples of and
download more sapi 5 and microsoft speech platform voices? Can
Rockbox use any other speech engines? Right now, I only have
Microsoft Sam and he sounds like he has a bad cold and my .talk
files are hard to hear. Also, My pc is falling apart, gets very
hot even after using it for a short time, and sometimes shuts
down in the middle of using it. I think it will soon quit all
together. So everything on it is backed up to dropbox and or a
hard drive and I bought a Mac. So can you please send me the
download link for the Mac Rockbox utility? If I was using the
Mac, what voices would I use for the .talk and .voice files?
Would I have the same ones as in windows or would I be able to
use the ones in VoiceOver or what? I also noticed that when going through my files, in-between each of my files, it says talk clip.
In other words, it is reading out my files as well as the .talk
files. Is there a way to get it to only read the actual files and
not say the .talk files? Thank you.

Hi Jessica,

RBClip uses the SAPI5 voices from your computer. When you wish to delete a file or folder, you can do so safely and without any ill effects on any other talk files. RBClip processes one folder at a
time, but you can have all your folders inside one folder like
inside
the My Music folder and process the My Music folder. It'll do all
the
folders inside the My Music folder if you've set RBClip up as I
suggested. I use Zira Pro which is a Microsoft Speech Platform 11 voice. Zira is also found in the SAPI5 voice choices in Windows 8
and
above. I don't use RBClip but instead use the Rockbox Utility to
create my talk files. The voice on my computer sounds like that
because I was using Zira Pro as my screen reader's voice.

Does RB clip come with a voice or do I have to install 1? If I
have to install 1, where do I get it from? If I make a .talk
file
for a file or folder on my player, then decide I do not want the folder or file associated with the .talk file I made anymore, Is it safe to just delete the files or folders I no longer want and
there associated .talk files without harming the other talk
files
on my player? Do I have to process 1 folder at a time, or can I
do ctrl a at the folder list to process them all at once? Those
ones anyone should be able to answer, now I have a few for Laz.
What is the name of the voice you used to make the .talk files
for the files and folders that came on the player? When I make
my
.talk files, I want them to sound the same as the ones that are
already there. I noticed you had the rate at 60 percent and the
volume at 100 percent in your podcast. Is that also how you did
it when you set up the .talk files on the players? As an aside,
I
noticed your computer has the same voice as the players. How did
 you mannage that? Thank you.
