I did all the things you listed below and have the same results.
Of course, nothing good.
I don't think it is the power button, when I press it the player says recent
book marks.
Then almost instantly it sounds like it shuts off with out the termination
announcement.
Do not know this for sure, have to wait until someone who is sighted comes
around.
If that is the case, cold it be the battery?
And if it is the battery, is there a way for me to replace it?

If you actualy held the power button down for at least 30 seconds and
it didn't shut down, then I would imagine that it's stuck in a glitch.
What happens if you just leave it alone? Does it shut down after five
minutes of inactivity?
The only thing one can do at this poinst that I know of is to put it
down and let the battery run down until it shuts itself down. I would
then charge it and reset it by holding the power button down for at
least 30 seconds, then use it as normal.
This is the first time in about a year and a half that I've received a
report of a player getting stuck in a glitch. So if the above doesn't
resolve it, then I think it might be a power button problem.
