Ah you're asking the wrong person - yes I am English - I put forward the
fact that the UK is NOT trading on the Euro as an example of the inherent
British distrust of handing over the keys to the farm to a third party to
run..

John,

There may be cracks in the dam, but totalitarians don't give up easily. They
will find other ways to stay in power. It's been several years now since the
draft EU constitution was rejected in the only two countries where ordinary
citizens were given the opportunity to vote on it. The result? No
discernible change - the same elitist mentality prevails.

Similarly, even after a court decision and massive evidence of its safety,
the Swedish government is keeping up its efforts to ban deca-BDE. "We know
better than you do what is best for you, so just do as we say and no one
will get hurt."

As I recall you're from Great Britain - wouldn't you agree that Europeans
generally have less distrust of too much government power than people in the
US (and that's how this juggernaut got launched)? What magnitude of disaster
would it take to dismantle the EU bureaucracy and send the politicians
packing - or even make the legislative process transparent and them
accountable to voters?

To all subscribers, did you get any sense of which way the news reporter for
this story was leaning? (e.g., his use of the terms "better educated" and
"scruffy.")
