We have a citrix server farm connected to the internet via a Cat 6513 and
two 3725's, each of which feeds to separare ISP's. We use BGP between the
3725's and the internet, and OSPF inside. Because of an issue with ISP A, we
couldn't get full and default routes from them, so we settled on default for
the time being. We use an OSPF metric to prefer one router or the other for
outgoing traffic. On thursday last, we changed this preferred outgoing
taffic to ISP B, in preparation for fixing the issue with ISP A. The
incoming traffic is almost perfectly balanced between the two ISPs; the
oubound now all goes out over ISP B.
Starting today, we started seeing large quantities of disconnects, with no
sign of any link-layer issues. Traffic was flowing fine, more or less
consistantly, and the only issue was the disconnects in citrix. Adopting the
"whats changed" attitude, I changed the metric so that all outbound traffic
now goes back over ISP A, although inbound is still balanced. The
disconnects went away (aside from the 'normal' number).
The thing is, I am stumped on why this would happen. My only theory is that
something happened on ISP B's upstream which caused the outgoing traffic to
shoot up in latency or something else like that, but we don't see much
evidence of that (aside from this).
Anyone have an idea - is assymettric traffic flow just A Bad Thing in citrix
land?
TIA,
