MessageI always restrict the recent files to about 5 maximum myself. Your description of the sluggish autocomplete interested me because ive seen the save as function from word being really slow/sluggish when using the Novell client with Citrix/Terminal Services. I find its very slow when typing in a new file name to save ( ive done all the tweaks from ithowto.com). Thanks for the info, always informative as usual :¬) regards ----- Original Message ----- From: Mack, Rick To: 'thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Sent: Saturday, August 16, 2003 9:19 AM Subject: [THIN] Re: roaming profiles not logging off Hi, Many Microsoft apps use common dialog components. The autocompletion function in IE that completes URLs when you're typing them in by looking at the history list, is the same one that is used by excel to fill cells if you are typing the same string in multiple cells, and is used by the office explorer to try and autocomplete the "save as" filename as well as additional functionality. Autocompletion doesn't appear to cache anything filename wise, so if you've got the application data folder redirected, then if you are saving a file in word etc using the office explorer interface for every keystroke you enter, autocomplete does a complete filename scan of the office recent files folder (under application data\microsoft). If there are a large number of files, this can be really painfully slow. Since autocompletion is actually quite useful (mostly), it's better to prune the recent files folder (by GPO or manually) than to disable autocompletion. Hope that makes sense. regards, Rick Ulrich Mack rmack@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Volante Systems 18 Heussler Terrace, Milton 4064 Queensland Australia tel +61 7 32467704 -----Original Message----- From: M [mailto:mathras@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Saturday, 16 August 2003 10:53 AM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Re: roaming profiles not logging off Rick Thats some interesting information you posted with regards to the save as being potentiallu slow. What autocompletion option are u referring to ? regards ----- Original Message ----- From: Mack, Rick To: 'thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Sent: Saturday, August 16, 2003 12:37 AM Subject: [THIN] Re: roaming profiles not logging off Hi Dave, Redirect everything you can, although the selection is a bit limited using a normal GPO. We set up one site with unmanaged folder redirection, where we redirected appdata, desktop, personal, cookies, favorites and history to the users home drive. While managed folder redirection (eg using standard policies) is a lot easier in terms of implementation, it didn't do all the folders we wanted. More importantly, because the users home directory locations were organised by roles, eg no consistent location relative to a server share except %servername%\%username%$ there wasn't a lot of choice. However, regardless of the way you do it, folder redirection will generally prevent large profiles, one of the major problems with logon speed and roaming profiles. The improvement in logon speeds for users that save files to their desktop, for example, is dramatic. One mandatory addition to folder redirection is that you HAVE to also limit the size of the office recent file list if appdata is redirected. If autocompletion is enabled (default!) a long recent file list can result in majorly slow keyboard response when users try to type in a file name using "save as". Autocompletion tries to do a match against the recent file list for every keystroke. On a user with several hundred entries in the recent file folder (appdata\microsoft\office...) this is slow. regards, Ulrich Mack rmack@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Volante Systems 18 Heussler Terrace, Milton 4064 Queensland Australia tel +61 7 32467704 -----Original Message----- From: Dave.Boatman@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:Dave.Boatman@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Friday, 15 August 2003 8:39 PM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Re: roaming profiles not logging off Out of interest which settings for redirected folders in W2K OU's make the login process faster (if at all). I can see that setting "my doc's" to the TS users home drive would be faster - as my doc's could be huge. But what about Application Data Desktop Or Start menu Which is better for speed of login - profile or home drive ? ... has SP4 made any differences Dave Boatman -----Original Message----- From: Mack, Rick [mailto:RMack@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: 15 August 2003 04:32 To: 'thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Subject: [THIN] Re: roaming profiles not logging off Hi Jason, It's a feature of SP4. the profile folder needs to be owned by the user, and he/shhe needs full access rights. regards, Rick Ulrich Mack rmack@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Volante Systems 18 Heussler Terrace, Milton 4064 Queensland Australia. tel +61 7 3246 7704 -----Original Message----- From: Jason A.
