Thanks - I actually figured this out a few minutes after posting the message
simply by tinkering with RMS.

Well, if you have removed some servers from the farm and you are getting =
this message, that means that one of the servers that had been removed =
was the Primary Farm Metric Server. Since you are not using RMS but do =
have it installed, this message can be ignored. If you want this =
message to go away, then do the following:

1. Within the CMC, highlight the Resource Manager node.
2. In the right pane, select the Farm Metric Server tab.
3. Select "Change Farm Metric Servers" button.
4. Select the Primary server, and you can set the Secondary server to =
<Not set>.

We keep getting the error:

"The Farm Metric Server(s) cannot be contacted. This will cause =
Resource Manager to function incorrectly...etc, etc."

We do have Resource Manager installed on all servers, but are not using =
it. Our data store is located in a SQL database.

We didn't used to get this error, but have been recently doing a lot of =
development work in the farm (since its pre-production) and have been =
moving a lot of servers in and out of the farm, and have changed the =
default zone name.

What could be causing this behavior. We have noticed some other =
oddities, and want to make sure that they don't coincide with this =
error.

Thanks,
