Every role can run and run well. The issue is overall scale and performance.
You will always get more users running Windows/PS on the raw hardware.
However, if you are bottlenecked by RAM or the OS or certain applications
you can actually get more users on virtual machines. Like most things, "it
depends". However, with the newer dual core processors, higher RAM density
and VMWare ESX 3.x the situation is much better.
How many users and hardware servers are you considering??
