NIC teaming on Dell 2650s:

Nice to see we're not the only people with problems...

We team for redundancy, not load balancing, but our TSs have been =
falling=3D
 over under relatively moderate loads (40 users). We have also had =
proble=3D
ms with Lotus Notes servers that are load / NIC related.

To sort of sum up:
The onboard NICs are made by Broadcom, and are also used in HP Proliant =
s=3D
ervers (DL380 G3?)
Broadcom basically admitted the problem, and they have released a new =
dri=3D
ver
HP have admitted to the problem, developed their own driver, and it's =
bee=3D
n available for a while
Dell have released a new teaming driver for their onboard NICs. It sort =
o=3D
f misteriously apeared on their web site last week.

We know that NIC teaming with the onboard NICs has been a problem for =
som=3D
e time on these Dell servers, but Dell seem to have been very reluctant =
t=3D
o share this sort of information. We got as far as "oh yeah - I know =
what=3D
 that is - disable the NIC teaming" with Dell tech support, but when =
pres=3D
sed, he escalated it to his supervisor, and there was something in there =
=3D
that Dell are not releasing to the public as we got no further. We =
weren'=3D
t too impressed with this...

So anyway, if you've got Dell servers (or HP servers) with these =
Boradcom=3D
 NICs, try updating the drivers to the latest version.

Jeremy Thomas

if you can get reliable teaming with any dell BROADCOM 1GB nics them you =
=3D
=3D3D
are doing better than us...they are the biggest piece of rubbish..

in standalone setup they are fine....

in adaptive load balancing it looks like they loose a route and then =
=3D3D
nothing can go in or out, however the link stays up (not good with =
=3D3D 6=3D
0-80
users on a 1655mc blade :(  _

jump on the cnsole and tracert to the gateway of the vlan and they fix =
=3D3D
themselves up again

You don't say how big a farm you're planning, but...

Test, test and test again. 2003 is good. FR3 is good. Dell 2650 servers =
=3D3D
a=3D3D3D re =3D3D3DE9"!$* but just about do the job (I bear a grudge =
against
anything =3D3D no=3D3D3D n HP/Compaq). Combine the lot with NIC teaming =

onboard Dell =3D3D NIC=3D3D3D s, and you get capacity, performance and =

problems under a =3D3D mod=3D3D3D erate load.

What are the general thoughts on the combination of Windows 2003 server =
a=3D
nd
XP FR3 - safe for production? I am planning a new farm and was thinking
about sticking with 2000 or jumping to 2003.
