I cannot speak for Florida but I have a friend who used to come here (Texas) 
from Bedford with the type of license that you have. He would also get an 
international driving permit (don't know how or where) and never had any 
problems renting a car. Hope this helps.

        I'm visiting the States ina  few weeks, for the first time. I have a car
        booked but my UK driving license is of the old paper type, rather than 
one
        of the "big-brother is watching you" photocards. Can any Floridians 
confirm
        that I'll be able to rent the car using that license and my passport at
        Orlando Airport?
