Thanks for that. I'll look into a maintenance plan.
I eventually found the DBCC SHRINKFILE command, which claims to have worked
although it can take some time for the file to actually shrink. I've just
realised I've been poring over an MSSQL6.5 book, which doesn't have this
particular DBCC command. Typical.

you should have a 'maintenance plan' within SQL server itself, this backs
the database up to yet another file, it should be this file that you backup.

within the maintenance plan, there is an option to also backup the
transaction log, and I think it is this that stops it from growing.

also, you can limit the size the log can grow to, but this will cause a
problem if you hit the size limit, i.e. your maintenance plan is not cutting
the transaction log away....

It's backed up to a remote server using Veritas Backup Exec. The backup
seems to be working properly.

Is the DB getting backed up by SQL. The transaction logs generally continue
to grow when a backup is not running.

I have a database with 40MB of data and an almost empty 3.9GB transaction
log. How would I go about getting the transaction log file back to a
reasonable size? I've tried dumping it and setting a checkpoint with the
"truncate log on checkpoint" option set, but the physical file remains at
3.9GB.

I don't really want to take the service offline as it's a busy machine but I
will if I have to.

Regards
Angus
