am I making this more complicated than it has to be? 
I have everything setup per the admin guides.  my network admin opened the
necessary ports on the firewall accordingly.  Under IIS I change the SSL
port to 444 and run IISRESET.  That's it, he doesn't have to change anything
else?
Sorry for my ignorance on this the Web stuff is not my strong suit.
