Thanks Rick.I appreciate the info. I downloaded the USB-IT demo from the website and I hope to begin some testing next week. I am building out some servers today to do testing for this project and another one as well. I was surprised that I did not hear from them after giving them my contact information in order to get the product download. Usually when you do that, someone calls or emails you within a few minutes <g>. I would like to speak with someone from their organization to determine if I should even be testing their product. The way this USB device works is to create a virtual com port and then it uses a dll to to bridge the communications between the virtual port and the physical port and the java app to push the data up to the web. Maybe Peter will shoot me an email and I can discuss this with him. Thanks again for your help!! rob ________________________________ From: thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Rick Mack Sent: Thursday, April 20, 2006 5:57 PM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: RE: [THIN] Re: USB-IT feedback Hi, SInce the devices are detected, it's technically possible. The issue with the normal client drive redirection behaviour is that the client drive has to be present when the session is initialized and nothing that changes after that point will work. It's possible there are a couple of work-arounds but I really haven't looked at the issue very much. Back to USB-IT though, handling USB memory devices at the server level makes a huge amount of sense if you want to control what devices are being used and what they are used for.... I'll send Peter Ghostine an email ;-) regards, Rick Ulrich Mack Volante Systems Level 2, 30 Little Cribb Street Coronation Drive Office Park Milton Qld 4064 tel: +61 7 32431847 fax: +61 7 32431992 rick.mack@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx ________________________________ From: thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx on behalf of M Sent: Thu 20/04/2006 17:48 To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Re: USB-IT feedback Sorry to jump in Rick, They (Provision) wouldnt happen to support users inserting USB keys / Devices after the Citrix session has started would they ? Im trying to find a solution that supports this on Citrix Any ideas ? ----- Original Message ----- From: Rick Mack <mailto:Rick.Mack@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Thursday, April 20, 2006 10:39 PM Subject: RE: [THIN] USB-IT feedback Hi Rob, Provision enabled USB support by redirecting client USB through an ICA/RDP virtual channel, and then using a virtual USB hub on the server end. Any client-side USB device is visible to the server. But this will only work if you have appropriate server-side drivers to support non-PDA devices. At the moment USB-IT supports palm and blackberry with full ActiveSync support for all versions due in the next few weeks. I suspect that if you were to contact Provision, and your need was finiacially viable for them, it wouldn't take a lot of effort to support the BodyBugg. regards, Rick Ulrich Mack Volante Systems Level 2, 30 Little Cribb Street Coronation Drive Office Park Milton Qld 4064 tel: +61 7 32431847 fax: +61 7 32431992 rick.mack@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx ________________________________ From: thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx on behalf of Rob Slayden Sent: Thu 20/04/2006 14:14 To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] USB-IT feedback Happy Thursday to all! I am looking for feedback on the Provision Networks USB-IT product. Has anyone used it? Does it work well? Has anyone used it for bi-directional communication to USB devices other than handhelds? The reason I ask is we are trying to develop a solution to implement a device at our fitness clubs that requires 2-way communication between a USB device and a website to upload data from the device. It's called BodyBugg and it tracks a user's caloric expenditure which they then upload to the website via USB cable connected to this device. I want the ability to deploy device communication to each of our fitness clubs over our existing Citrix MetaFrame XPe 1.0 FR3/SP4 infrastructure using our existing Wyse Winterm CE-based terminals. My alternative will be to deploy an embedded XP terminal after loading software on it to support the device communication, but I really don't want to push out yet another "one-off" to support this product. I know this is probably not enough information for anyone to make any serious recommendations, but if anyone knows about any products that will enable 2-way communication between Citrix and/or Terminal Server and a USB device, I would love to know about it.
