We've been running Windows 7 for a while. It is a quantum leap improvement over Vista in zillions of ways- but very few of those are big headline reasons to upgrade. So, for example, you can move the yellow bar (now blue) at the top of an RDP session so if you are piggybacking from server to server it is easy to see which one you are in and minimize/maneuver. The Microsoft version of a Dock is leaps and bounds beyond the Taskbar/Quicklaunch (And indeed OSXs...learn to use right-click, Apple!). Support for software that would not play in Vista is *much* better. Displaying 2 documents side by side is easy. It runs fine in 1 MB of RAM. Better (A lot better) power management and thence faster restart times (And lower electricity costs leading to lower environmental impact). Lots of little things like that...but a compelling business case for moving from XP? Very difficult indeed...you could argue improved productivity, but the cost would be significant. Moving from Vista? If you have software assurance, do it...the upgrade is cleanest I've ever seen. Try with a couple of test boxes and enjoy. If you have to pay for the upgrade from Vista? Personally I would. But I don't have to justify myself to an FD... Of course, if you are a fairly Thin Shop, your OS is more or less irrelevant anyways :) From: thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:thin-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Doug Rooney Sent: 16 November 2009 15:20 To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Re: To upgrade or not to upgrade to Windows 7 Well, that was indeed a good article, but as they said, they having been using 7 for a long time, what it did not address was the major question, WHY, why should I go through the hassle of upgrading? My ERP software does not play well with Vista, so my guess is that 7 will be the same, since the majority of what I am hearing is that 7 is just Vista with a different face, and quite frankly, I found Vista to be a royal pain in the rear when trying to do basic things like set network parameters. I fully agree with the saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it", and XP worked fine, seems like MS just wanted to rake in more dough, which is of course why they are in business, but let's face it, Vista was not what they promised, and why should I believe 7 will be? So, if anyone has a good side by side comparison of XP, Vista and 7 that is truly unbiased, I would like to read it. Thank You ~Doug Rooney Sonoma Tilemakers IT Manager 7750 Bell Rd. But doing this many of us want to know what improvement we will see in performance, specifically in boot time and speed , like to know stability of this system etc. Here is a nice article I came across on whether To upgrade or not to upgrade to Windows 7. Just read it from here, http://www.ezdia.com/To_upgrade_or_not_to_upgrade_to_Windows_7/Content.do?id=807 ________________________________ SUBJECT TO CONTRACT
