Jesse, check out PowerFuse on www.powerfuse.com. It offers a great way
to publish apps/desktop easy to control and manage and you can easy
enable/disable use of floppy on a per user/group/ou/location basis. We
have implemented it in multiple schools/universities etc.

You can control what they can access, open, execute etc very easy! Ideal
for those students!!!

Discouraging the use is difficult. You take a school district with 2400
=3D
kids who have for the last four years been transferring files back and =
=3D
forth via floppy disk and now say, "you can't do this", there's =3D
potential for problems unless a workaround is found. We do not, nor =3D
will we provide email for students so that's not an option. Floppy =3D
drives can be a sticky situation here.

Thanks for the info about the boot time with published desktops, that =
=3D
would be ideal. 5 seconds and bam! Ready to roll.

Yes. I would discourage the use of floppy drives. For example, maybe
they could email the file to an outside email address.

Or, "some" of the Wyse devices come with a USB Floppy drive option.

In Citrix you can map the floppy drive as a virtual drive.

Also, it seems that most thin client devices do NOT come with a floppy =
=3D
=3D3D
drive. That could be a problem for me since we're a school district and
=3D3D students use disks to take homework home. :(

This is the kind of information I'm looking for yes. $299 is a good =3D
=3D3D3D
price. I'm going to need something that ICA/RDP compatible most likely.
=3D3D =3D3D3D Also, I'm assuming there's no OS on these machines right? =
 =3D
They
boot =3D3D =3D3D3D right into the ctrl-alt-del prompt of the =
terminal/citrix
server within =3D3D =3D3D3D seconds of turning them on? Or do they =
first =3D
have
to navigate through =3D3D =3D3D3D an OS on the thin client?

I'll check out the Wyse and Neoware products. Are there any other =
=3D3D3D
mentionables?

Depends on what your objective is. For example.

I like the Wyse 1200LE for it's ease of use, ease of administration,
security, and cost factor.

The Wyse 1200LE runs an 500KB Unix Kernal. This device can grab it's
config from an FTP Server and TCP/IP parameters from a DHCP Server (can
be the same box).

A typical scenario would be to setup a DHCP Server and FTP Server.
Create your config file and copy it to your FTP Server. When the 1200LE
boots (in about 2 seconds) it grabs its TCP/IP parameters from the DHCP
Scope and the scope has information pertaining to the config file.

No information is stored on the device!

Imagine if you had to change 2000 devices...simply change the config
file.

To broaden this concept and allow multiple configs simply create
multiple directories with multiple config files.

You can define your config files to connect to a specific published
application or desktop. You can force a login or allow the user to
input a login...

This device greatly reduces your TCO to the organization at a price
point of $299

(No-I don't work for Wyse)

Can someone provide me some information on how thin client devices =3D
=3D3D3D3D
compare to one another? I've always used PCs for thin clients running
=3D3D3D3D
on top of an OS like NT or 2000. I need to look at thin client devices
=3D3D3D3D but am confused as to what features/benefits some provide over =
=3D
the
=3D3D =3D3D3D =3D3D3D3D others. IBM, Compaq, Wyse, etc. I'm open to =
any =3D
options
right now. =3D3D =3D3D3D =3D3D3D3D Prices on these things seem to range =
from
=3D
$300
to $800... What's the =3D3D =3D3D3D3D major differences? What's needed?
Thanks.
