Cheers Ron,

Are there any issues in setting up the workstation (client) printers on =
the File & Print Server, so they are treated the same as the network =
printers in Citrix.

Whichever way you implement the client printers it is never going to =
work if the user turns off their PC!!! however this isn't a big issue =
for me as the users that print all sit around the pc in question.

Thanks for your help on this.

Ok since the printers are already shared (in one way or another) turn
off auto-created printers all together.=3D20

Then read in the Workstations as Print servers
For Jet Directs just setup shares for them on one of the File servers.

Then handle all the printers as network printers and assigne them to
your user groups.

Problem with this is of course that the user turns off that workstation
that hosts a printer.

Yeap...

Basically we have a number of network printers (like HP8150's), we then
=3D3D
have a number of colour printers, in some cases these are networked =
=3D3D
(mostly HP Deskjet cp1700's with Jet direct boxes), but we also have =
=3D3D
smaller Deskjet's (895CXi, 950, etc) on the back of users PC's. Upto 5
=3D3D
or 6 people in the same office will print to these smaller Deskjet =3D3D
printers, as well as to the networked HP8150's.

Oh no....
I never share a workstation Printer. I guess you can... but hmmm

So you have say 5 users.
1 has a printer
the other 4 print to that printer via a share on the first PC?

So I am on the right track...

With the local client connected printers, other users do print to them =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D
via sharing, both locally on their PC's and though Citrix.

Well if you have a combination of printers (autocreated and network)
there are several ways to go.

One way would be to use just XP features.
SO, of those 17 printers figure out the network printers and set up the
shares on the print server.
Create groups based on the shares.=3D3D3D3D3D20
Read that print server into the CMC.
Then assign the groups to the appropriate printers.

THEN: use a Citrix policy within the CMC to allow other users to auto
create their printers (these are user with locally attached devices).
BUT not the users that are getting assigned printers.

Get it?
This is easy in your small environment. If you get bigger it can be a
hassle and auto created printers or network assigned by them selves
might be easier. And this doesn't even get into Creating printers via a
VBS or KIX script or anything.

I am currently carrying out research into the best way to print from =
=3D3D
=3D3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D3D3D
Metaframe and could like to get any experience, thoughts, etc from you =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D3D3D
guys.
Currently all the printers are installed on the Metaframe box, and =
=3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D3D3D
shared. Users then either print direct to the printer, though the =
=3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D3D3D
share, or have the printer installed locally on their PC which is then =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D3D3D
auto-created when they logon to Citrix and they print though that.....
=3D3D3D3D3D3D
Note: I didn't set this up.

I am in the progress of rebuilding all the servers at the company and =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D3D3D
this is how I think would be more ideal.

1. Install all the printers on a File and Print W2K Server.
2. Setup the F&P Server as a Network Printer Server in Citrix.
3. Create a "user / printer" matrix and setup each user so they
only =3D3D3D3D3D3D
have the printers shown they actually need.
4. Turn off auto-creating client printers.

We have 1 Citrix Server (will be Metaframe FR2 on W2K), 55 users (but =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D3D3D
growing), and 17 printers (selection of networked and client connected =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D3D3D
via LPT or USB). The user base is a mix of Thin Clients, and PC's =
=3D3D3D
=3D3D3D3D3D3D
running W98, WNT, W2K and WXP.
I would be grateful for any feedback in the above.

Thanks,

Steve Rance
