There is also 824309. I have a simliar problem to that below, but it only affects new logons. You enter credentials, but never get a desktop. Existing sessions may, or may not, slow down a bit. I haven't called in yet for the fix because a pre-req is SP4. adam "Foote, Eric" <EFoote@xxxxxxx> To: <thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent by: cc: thin-bounce@freel Subject: [THIN] Re: Server farm freezing ists.org 09/25/2003 08:38 AM Please respond to thin There is a Microsft HF that fixes a freezing problem that occurs when other users log on. 324446 I think. The attempt is to minimize the instances where users are losing files by saving documents anywhere. We've also got a c/s app that accesses a SQL database directly. I'll investigate both the f/s and db server for symptoms of being "hammered". -dave From: Mack, Rick [mailto:RMack@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Wednesday, September 24, 2003 2:30 AM To: David E. Payne Subject: RE: [THIN] Server farm freezing Hi Dave, The uuencoding looks like OWA gone bad ;-) But back to your problem... The fact that the systems recover when you pull the network makes make me almost certain that one of your back-end systems is getting too sluggish ot too hammered (your file server). Things that I regularly do (on the back end file servers!) is define and increase maxmpxct/maxworkitems, make sure virus checking software is set to inbound checking only, check to make sure nothing else is hammering the file servers (eg backup jobs gone overtime) and make sure that you haven't got something stupid going on like a combination of compressed directories/files and virus checking. In a windows 2000 AD, doing the same on your domain controllers isn't a bad idea. If nothing's changed in the last week or so on the back-end, you'll often find that something new on the TS systems (eg folder redirection, new apps etc) is hammering the network a lot harder, precipitating the hangs. The "fix" is usually tuning the back end systems, or getting a bit smart about where your app writes/reads temporary files etc. A classic example for me was Corel Draw 9. This problem isn't hard to cure so hang in there. regards, Rick Ulrich Mack rmack@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx Volante Systems 18 Heussler Terrace Milton 4064 Queensland, Australia tel +61 7 32467704 -----Original Message----- From: David E. Payne To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: 24/09/2003 1:53 PM Subject: [THIN] Server farm freezing I'm having a problem with a 4-server farm. Specs: Metaframe XPa SP3 FR3, W2K SP3, IMA database on SQL 2000. Applications: Office, Great Plains, Medinformatics. Seemingly randomly, one of the 4 servers will start to lock up. Sessions will start hanging, the server will become unresponsive, new sessions will be able to get a logon screen and enter credentials, but the logon never gets past the greyed logon screen. Eventually, the other servers will start hanging as well, until the whole farm is down. While the systems are hanging, we've been able to monitor some activity. There are no obvious CPU spikes, runaway processes, memory leaks, or out of control disks. The IMA service and other MF services will not stop and restart during the freezes, they just hang when trying to stop or restart them. The only way we've been able to revive the machines is to 1) reboot, or 2) unplug the network cable for 20 seconds and plug it back in. Then, whatever is hanging up the systems releases and we're able to get users back on the system. I've put some calls into Citrix on the issue and we haven't been able to pin it down yet. We rebuilt one system from scratch, and installed only the main business app on it, and started getting freeze ups within a couple of days. I'm looking for any insight into similar problems or recommendations for avenues of attack for this issue.
