May be just a coincidence but a couple of weeks I had a call from Dell UK
Support as I had bought quite a few Dell servers for some of my client sites
in late 2001.

They emailed a patch/update for the RAID controller which to date has not
displayed any problems.

Do you know if info about this will be of any use as I have the patch here -
haven't applied it as yet to any servers because my attitude is like most -
don't fix it if it ain't broke, but I just found it strange that Dell was
contacting its customers so much later after original purchase, so have the
email if anyone wants it forwarded

I've seen it with two different clients.
- The first one had a broken fan on his CPU, so the error had a clear
hardware origin.
- The second one was on a Dell 1750.
They had a farm of 12 identical servers, all with an identical image. And
only one of these kept crashing every few hours, but only when it was in
use.
After stopping logons to that server, it kept running for days without a
problem. As soon as I would put some stress on it, it would crash within
minutes. Yet Dell's
hardware-test tools would give no clue as to what the problem was.
As I left this client before the problem was solved, I don't know their
solution.

I know a colleague at that client reads this Thin-list, so maybe he can fill
in...

some of our Dell 2650 servers. We think it's a hardware (motherboard or
power
supply) issue, though we're trying to escalate this Dell to get a definitive
answer, and it's a slow process at the moment.
