You could also disable this using group policy.
User settings - Windows components - Internet explorer....

You can get rid of this before installing Win2K:
- go to the \i386-directory of the installation-files
- find icwnt5.inf and open it with Notepad
- find the line ';Do desktop icon'
- move to the line beneath and put a '; ' in front of it, so as to make it a
remark
Any computer that is installed with these files will not make the icon on the
desktop.
