I'm all happy to go SAS, but for HP to not support 15rpm drives in a 2.5config and only build the HP DL360 G5 to take 2.5...why would you. I say wait until the technology catches. Why pay $50 bucks less to have a disk that performs 50% slower. I am sticking with the SAS 3.5 15k drives....and if that means buying someone elses hardware ie Dell etc.. happy to go there. HP is up selling the fact that the drives are smaller.....who cares, the server still takes up 1 RU. It's not a mobile that you want to fit in your back pocket. Servers are all about speed.....faster is better....size doesn't matter :) On 11/8/06, BRUTON, Malcolm, GBM <Malcolm.BRUTON@xxxxxxxx> wrote:
Regarding SAS and SCSI HP are shipping 2.5 inch 10,000rpm SAS drives with there new G5 (Intel) and G2 (AMD) server as an option. They say they outperform the old 15,000rpm SCSI drives !!!! I believe in the future they are going to introduce 15,000 rpm 2.5 inch drives..... Just last week I was working on several (*cough*IBM, sorry Jeremy) x346s and was less than impressed with the quality and stability of the servers. At another customer, the HP585 G1s are rock solid awesome machines. Another place, the Dell 2850 dual-core Xeons are really impressive. I've had customers kick out Dell for HP. And other that have kicked HP for Dell. Each vendor has had its share of problems and issues. I'd kick Dell servers out to if I could. cheaper is not better and they are most definately not the same. On 11/7/06, *Roger Riggins* <roger.riggins@xxxxxxxxxx> wrote: There goes the chatter again. Dell will sell you the exact same server as IBM for half the price. What were you saying about markup? Why don't you ask your IBM rep about their "Get The Dell Out" promotion? Funny how they can magically cut their quote in half to match a Dell quote. Why start these threads? It's like saying Chevy is better than Ford. As for the serial bottle-neck, why don't you call the developers and manufacturers and let them know that you think serial means bottleneck so they can halt production? I can't believe those idiots didn't consult you first. The first 'S' stands for 'Serial', sounds like a bottle-neck to me. Obviously the vendors are pushing what gets them the best mark-up, not what is best for us the admin's nor for the users. Dell makes that *very* clear. Thank You -Doug Rooney Sonoma TileMakers IT Systems Administrator 7750 Bell Rd. On the contrary, it would probably make me think otherwise. I really dislike having to work with Dell servers, especially when compared to the Proliant series. If it was adopted for the Proliant series, then it would get my attention. Knowing Dell, they are probably adopting it because they got an inexpensive buy-in and are backing it as a cost-cutting measure, not because it is better technology. I could be wrong because I haven't kept up with emerging hardware in a while. One thing I do know....Dell servers are weak sauce. I may be incorrect but our Dell rep just told us that though they will support SCSI still they will stop selling SCSI in a couple of months. Have other people heard the same thing? What they are pushing on server end is not SATA but SAS which they explain as actually being SCSI drives with enhanced technology such as the multiple bus for each hard drive vs. SCSI drives all going thru same bus. All in all if the entire Dell business is willing to stake so much confidence in the new technology musn't it be for a good reason? Up to now I was a stickler for SCSI but this is starting to make me think...
