I suppose that I can not argue the proprietary notion, however, when it comes to presentation to the file system; i.e.. nfs, http, or CIFS, it's transparent. I've used other non-NetApp NAS with equal success though more heartache. In short order though, I imagine that DAFS (direct access file systems) and other forthcoming technologies will not care if it's NAS or SAN by doing block level transfers over what ever wire that's there. I-SCSI will be a major factor here, but won't become a super-player until they overcome the processor load that it puts on the system CPU (The spec requires IPSEC for the stream) Everyone has got a favorite, mine is NAS for general file storage, db's, and email. It really depends on the application and what your tech's have experience on or are willing to learn. BTW, we SAN for our desktop backups in order to increase the throughput vs. tape and then backup the SAN. -----Original Message----- From: Joe Shonk [mailto:JShonk@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Tuesday, September 24, 2002 1:26 PM To: 'thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Subject: [THIN] Re: SAN solution opinions... Granted, NetApp seems to the exception to the group. However, I don't see how it's any less proprietary than a SANs. We've run both SQL Server & Oracle DB's on NAS and gotten better performance and overall database integrity & recoverability on Netapp's for quite some time. The Exchange team is still wavering due to Microsoft changing from "supported" to "not supported" but they want to move to it because of the backup & recover windows that snapshots give you. Not to mention that you can host several Exchange Server db's on a single Netapp. -----Original Message----- From: Joe Shonk [mailto:JShonk@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Tuesday, September 24, 2002 1:10 PM To: 'thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Subject: [THIN] Re: SAN solution opinions... For one, running Exchange and SQL databases off a NAS. I know it can be done, by why? -----Original Message----- From: Nail, Larry [mailto:lnail@xxxxxx] Sent: Tuesday, September 24, 2002 11:00 AM To: 'thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Subject: [THIN] Re: SAN solution opinions... Just food for thought, but we're still using NAS (network attached storage) until the SAN market stabilizes and doesn't tie you to a single vendor. Once the vendors all interoperate nicely we'll start playing with SAN for a general storage solution. If you don't have a problem being tied to a single vendor, no worries. -----Original Message----- From: Paul Beckman [mailto:pbeckman@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Tuesday, September 24, 2002 12:31 PM To: 'thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Subject: [THIN] SAN solution opinions... -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 we are looking at a couple of SAN solutions... does anyone have any suggestions on what they like.. any pro's cons? we are looking for about 800 to 900 gig of data and would like to have all of our citrix servers share one partition.. thanks, Paul Beckman MCSE MCT CCNA CCA Delta Health Group CIS Department (850) 470-0155 pbeckman@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx <mailto:pbeckman@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: PGPfreeware 7.0.3 for non-commercial use <http://www.pgp.com> iQA/AwUBPZChWRWcSOytpgTKEQLTxwCeLkVZx7jfDV+YNpI6tQazxTWnzs4AoIvn JjfT7ct5keYqB1SYXSGl2/9T =XIeu -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- ********************************************** This weeks sponsor Kevsoft Corporation TScale by Kevsoft Corporation Support 30% to 40% more users on your server farm without buying new hardware! http://www.kevsoft.com/ *********************************************** For Archives, to Unsubscribe, Subscribe or set Digest or Vacation mode use the below link. http://thethin.net/citrixlist.cfm ********************************************** This weeks sponsor Kevsoft Corporation TScale by Kevsoft Corporation Support 30% to 40% more users on your server farm without buying new hardware! http://www.kevsoft.com/ *********************************************** For Archives, to Unsubscribe, Subscribe or set Digest or Vacation mode use the below link. http://thethin.net/citrixlist.cfm ********************************************** This weeks sponsor Kevsoft Corporation TScale by Kevsoft Corporation Support 30% to 40% more users on your server farm without buying new hardware! http://www.kevsoft.com/ *********************************************** For Archives, to Unsubscribe, Subscribe or set Digest or Vacation mode use the below link. http://thethin.net/citrixlist.cfm ********************************************** This weeks sponsor Kevsoft Corporation TScale by Kevsoft Corporation Support 30% to 40% more users on your server farm without buying new hardware! http://www.kevsoft.com/ *********************************************** For Archives, to Unsubscribe, Subscribe or set Digest or Vacation mode use the below link. http://thethin.net/citrixlist.cfm ********************************************** This weeks sponsor Kevsoft Corporation TScale by Kevsoft Corporation Support 30% to 40% more users on your server farm without buying new hardware! http://www.kevsoft.com/ *********************************************** For Archives, to Unsubscribe, Subscribe or set Digest or Vacation mode use the below link. http://thethin.net/citrixlist.cfm ********************************************** This weeks sponsor Kevsoft Corporation TScale by Kevsoft Corporation Support 30% to 40% more users on your server farm without buying new hardware! http://www.kevsoft.com/ *********************************************** For Archives, to Unsubscribe, Subscribe or set Digest or Vacation mode use the below link. http://thethin.net/citrixlist.cfm ********************************************** This weeks sponsor Kevsoft Corporation TScale by Kevsoft Corporation Support 30% to 40% more users on your server farm without buying new hardware! http://www.kevsoft.com/ *********************************************** For Archives, to Unsubscribe, Subscribe or set Digest or Vacation mode use the below link. http://thethin.net/citrixlist.cfm ********************************************** This weeks sponsor Kevsoft Corporation TScale by Kevsoft Corporation Support 30% to 40% more users on your server farm without buying new hardware! http://www.kevsoft.com/ *********************************************** For Archives, to Unsubscribe, Subscribe or set Digest or Vacation mode use the below link. http://thethin.net/citrixlist.cfm
