Hi Jim,
The cyclone (hurricane) luckily didn't hit a major population center although
the people of Innisfail and surrounding districts would probably not agree.
They're still going to need a lot of help rebuilding their homes and their
lives.
Considering the severity of the storm there have been very few fatalities
reported. Anyone that didn't want to leave their home was forced to evacuate.
One thing that is going to help a lot is that the emergency services (army
included) were ready to move in to the coastal areas as soon as the storm had
passed. Help wasn't long in coming.
However the storm has swept inland over a huge area so there will inevitably be
people who will have to tough it out until help can get in. The storm intensity
diminished rapidly once it went over land, but getting 10 inches of rain in a
few hours isn't something I'd care to experience.
