I agree that the AV vendors probably have some catching up to do, but I was
also surprised to find out that for over a year now Mcafee has been detecting
and able to report on Spyware infections. That's a step in the right direction.
They told us that we have been workignon the removal code for some time and
were taking their time to make sure things were well tested internally. The
other thing they have going for them is they have a centralized management
system that is years ahead of anything the Spyware vendors have.

Symantec has started to add this functionality as well, but it sounds
like it's a generation behind McAfee. Unfortunately it would be way to
costly to switch from a major AV product to another AV product just to
gain spyware/adware removal, so I'm trying to find a dedicated product.
It's going to be a while until any AV vendor is up to par with the
dedicated spyware/adware products that have been evolving for years,
IMO. I really wish LavaSoft would make a centrally managed version of
Ad-Aware.

The new Mcafee v8 anti-virus software includes this functionality, and a
Centralized management tool called ePolicy Orchestrator. We already use
Mcafee for the desktops so are looking at it's new Spyware stuff. They
have been monitoring and reporting the Spyware infections for sometime
and are just integrating the removal functionality in the new client.

FYI,

I've not even tried PestPatrol desktop version even on a desktop, but I
just tried out PestPatrol Corporate Edition v5 and it was highly
disappointing. From what I've read of the standalone desktop version,
it's a very featureful product, but man is the Corporate edition lacking
in reporting, a good way to deploy and monitor the apps, etc. I was
really let down as I was hoping I could use it as a Corporate wide
solution. Now onward with the search for a good product.
