I believe the RFC says that you an MX record is not actually required; if in
the absence of an MX, an A record should be used for delivery (not a
CNAME). Or so my postfix mailing list has taught me.
If some mail servers are not sending you mail because you have no MX
records, it is *they* who are broken. However, it's just easiest and best
practice to have an MX record (or several, depending on your configuration).

I've been tshooting hDtlaw.com.
Yeah, they have no MX record for that domain. Any mail they receive is
purely co-incidental. Actually, they have an A record; some mail servers
will deliver to an A record if there is no MX for a domain, but exchange
ain't one of them.
You could make your name server a fake authoritative one for the domain
htdlaw.com and add your own MX, but you're better off telling htdlaw.com to
fix their NS also.
