1. Time.
2. Viable alternative - that addresses all factors.
3. Industry buy-in (vendors and corporates).
4. Receptive audience.
5. Motivation to change.
6. Paradigm shift in desktop usage / purpose.

But with 6 it's hard to imagine that MS won't have the resources to be
able to adapt or react - even if they've been a bit tardy in the past,
they've soon enough thrown enough at the area to be competitive, then
dominant.

Tighter and easier integration with current mid-tier levels (like
Windows back ends for AD and file and print). Less of a gulf in
skillsets for administrators. ISV buy-in.
