They are different. The ones in the domain view are domain groups. The one
in the local view are local groups to the workstation. There can be a local
administrator group just for a workstation and a separate administrator
group for all workstations on a domain. For example you'll see a guest
account both in the domain and when you look at the local machine and they
are just that. One of them is for the domain and one can only log onto the
local machine. So for example if you disable guest on the domain but not on
the local machine, guest could log onto your computer by choosing the
computer name in the logon box instead of the domain name, but could not log
onto the domain from any other machine.

ahaa, cunning reuse of software from MS there :)
thanks to both of you!

a question though - when the domain is selected, why does it appear to show
SOME of the local groups but not all? are they something daft like local to
the domain? they have a different icon from the rest of the groups..

Under the User drop down in User manager click on select domain and put in
the name of server in question. You should see all of the local groups.

ok lets change the subject now :)

does anyone know a way of viewing the local groups in an NT4 domain? I seem
to have a couple of groups on one of my servers which doesnt show up in the
User Manager program..
