I had seen this functionality was available with PowerChute business edition, the only snag being that all intermediate hubs / switches etc will also need to be on UPS power. Compared to a direct serial connection, relying on a master server and network comms seems to introduce multiple points of failure? -----Original Message----- From: Steve Greenberg [mailto:steveg@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: 14 May 2003 02:45 To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Re: OT - UPS and dual power supply servers The recent versions of APC software I have seen can control and = communicate with the UPS and servers over the network. Interestingly, none of the servers run PowerChute or have a serial port connection to any UPS, = hence in a full power cut situation will not automatically shut down (haven't had = to test this yet!). =20 To correct this, I was intending to simply connect each server to a UPS serial expander card and install the Powerchute software. However, each server power supply has been connected to a different UPS, presumably as = a redundancy measure, so I guess I'll need a serial connection to each = UPS. Can Powerchute can deal with this sort of dual power supply / UPS configuration, or do I need something else? The knowledgebase and documentation on the APC and Dell sites are not much help - really I'm looking for a document which describes best practice for redundant power supplies and UPS equipment. Any thoughts?
