That's what I'd recommend. The array will take a noticeable performance hit if it's running in a degraded state. Using the hot spare will keep that time to a minimum. I always go at least four drives for RAID 5.=20 Roger Riggins, A+ MCSE CCNA CCA ACES Systems Engineer * 319-287-3102 * roger@xxxxxxxxxxxx =20 -----Original Message----- From: Nail, Larry [mailto:lnail@xxxxxx]=20 Sent: Thursday, October 24, 2002 1:47 PM To: 'thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Subject: [THIN] Re: OT: Server Overkill? Could be, but if you've got the money, these will last a while. I've never been let down by spec'ing more than I need. I've also learned that over time, you'll end up adding more functions anyway to the boxes anyway. =20 I would only question the 3-36gb drivers to the file server. RAID 5 will give you ~72gb, a parity drive, and no hot spare. 4 - 5 drives would be a better configuration if possible, that gives you extra drive space & a hot spare. -----Original Message----- From: Mario Villarreal [mailto:MarioV@xxxxxxxxx]=20 Sent: Thursday, October 24, 2002 12:14 PM To: 'thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Subject: [THIN] OT: Server Overkill? Hello Yesterday's thread on the Dell servers was interesting and insightful. We are in the process of getting quotes for three more servers. One to do File Serving, another to be a DC for a w2k domain, and another to be our Oracle server. We were going with Dual Processor 1.6mzh with 2Gig RAM, 3-36g 15k Hard drives with a RAID-5 controller. Is this overkill? Thanks Mario=20 ********************************************** This weeks Sponsor NetX Inc Thin Client NetX Develops XP and NT Embedded=20 Thin Client Solutions, Easy to Configure,=20 Extremely Secure, and Remotely Managed.
