Micheal an online defrag won't decrease the size of your priv.edb (your
database), it will create whitespace that Exchange will use first before it
becomes bigger. If you are REALLY running low on space, you can run the
exchange optimizer to move your database to a different drive or run an
offline defrag...

You won't get the space back until an off-line defrag is done on your
databases. Look over the doco for Exutil and if you do an offline
defrag insure you have atleast as much free diskspace as your databases
are taking up or bad things happen.

I have an exchange server that is running low on disk space. I have
cleaned up old files, etc. and had users delete unwanted stuff and sent
and deleted messages, but it doesn't help. how can i manually reclaim
that space to try and salvage this server?=20

Thanks,
