The server needs acces to the PDC, not the BDC, unless the server has
already been added to the domain. What you can try to do is put the
server on the same subnet as the PDC, add it to the domain, then put
it back on the subnet that you want it on. You won't be able to
change your password from this server, due to the fact that the PDC
needs to be contacted.

No the PDC is on a different segment. There is a BDC on the same
segment though.

Like I asked, is the PDC on the same subnet as your Internal NIC?

I know. But you have to understand the politics here. I have a 2
port firewall to use because a certain boss will not buy a better one
unless he can find it dirt chea on ebay(mumbling bad things under my
breath) so my DMZ is a hub off the actuall internet router before the
firewall. Therefore, this is the only way to do it that i know of.
Turn ip routing off between nics, and have one going to internet and
one going to internal network. Its a pain, I know but all I can do.

Well, is your PDC on the same subnet as this server? If not, then
you have a problem. Why are you wanting to put this server on the
Internet? Why not put this is your DMZ and add a static
route/conduit to this server that has a reverse NAT entry on the
firewall? What you are trying to do does not really make sense.
Besides, this can and will be a security hole.

Ok I got that. When multihoming like this, does it matter which nic
is the internal. right now nic1 is external and nic2 is internal.
external has ip, mask and default gateway defined. and internal only
has ip and mask defined. I can ping external and i can ping internal
addresses. But when i try to put the server in the domain thru the
internal nic, it says domain controller cannot be found. i have had
this working on another server but i can't find anything differnt
that i have done.

By chance, is this the second NIC in this server? If so, you will
need to unbind WINS and NetBIOS on the second NIC that will be
connected to the Internet. There is a MS KB article outlining that
you cannot have NetBIOS bound to multiple NIC's installed on one
machine.

Make sure you have removed it in server manager. Do you have any
static ip's in your wins? That could be it too

Subject: [THIN] OT: Duplicate name on network

I am building a standard NT4 server up with an external ip address
from my isp. during the install process i get the error "duplicate
name on network" and it asks for a new name. No matter what name i
put in, it gives me that error. Has anyone ever seen this before.
ITs a dual nic server. The first nic is the external and second is
internal address. the internal has not even gotten and address or
anything assigned to it yet. I haven't gotten that far.

anyone seen this before?

Thanks,
