The questions wasn't very difficult and I don't know why some people feel the need to never answer a direct question and provide some other way to prevent it in the first place. I would have asked for preventative measures if I wanted them, but common sense tells you the preventative measures. I asked the question because perhaps someone actually spoke with MS Licensing or <insert vendor here> Licensing about what really happens. If your truely SOL without the paperwork or there are some other arragenemnts or cirumstances that would get you your licenses back. I will call them myself but we all know they give you two different answers on two different days of the week. At least ONE person knew what I was looking for and didn't have to be wise about it. Thank you Jeff Stockard. -----Original Message----- From: brian.hill@xxxxxxxxx [mailto:brian.hill@xxxxxxxxx] Sent: Tuesday, November 19, 2002 1:53 PM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Re: OT: Disater Recovery-Licensing .....and what if the city I live in get's nuked and the offsite storage is destroyed too?! Then what? Huh? I guess if every method normally used doesn't work, then it wasn't meant for you to have those licenses. I'm not sure what it is you are looking for. The suggestions given are both logical and effective. I guess if you lose all record of the stuff you bought, then you are screwed if the manufacturer/reseller have no record of it. In that case, make it part of your disaster recovery plan to buy new software. If you bought the software, then the manufacturer/reseller/whoever will have some sort of record of it....unless they burn down at the same time. Even for the most catastrophic event of our time, 9-11, off-site storage more than 15 blocks away would have been plenty sufficient. How big of a catastrophe are you planning for and if it happens, will your licenses even matter anyway? So what happens in the event of catasrophy and all paperwork is lost? Fire safes have time limits on how long they last. I'm not looking for someone to tell me to get a better safe or move it offsite. I'm looking for answers to a valid question that anyone should be considered with IMO. It's a question that needs to be answered in my DR plan. -----Original Message----- From: Jamie Marshall [mailto:jamie.marshall@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Tuesday, November 19, 2002 1:17 PM To: 'thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Subject: [THIN] Re: OT: Disater Recovery-Licensing A fire safe that really is fire-proof? -----Original Message----- From: Hutchinson, Alan [mailto:Alan.Hutchinson@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: 19 November 2002 17:16 To: 'thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Subject: [THIN] Re: OT: Disater Recovery-Licensing Off site fire safe? -----Original Message----- From: Evan Mann [mailto:emann@xxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: 19 November 2002 16:35 To: 'thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx' Subject: [THIN] OT: Disater Recovery-Licensing What happens if your building burns down and your fire safe melts down to, and inside of it is all your licensing paperwork. Many licenses can be accounted for elsewhere by my figures (and guesses) such as: Citrix Licensing - All done online Microsoft Open Licenses - MS keeps their own records online Windows/Office licenses purchased with new PCs - Ex: Buy a new Dell with Win2K/Office 2K, Dell has records But what other products where you did not buy directly from the manuf. and no online record of licensing exists. For ex: Exchange licenses/CALs Windows CALs SQL Server licenses Photocopies are no good, and manuf.'s aren't just going to believe you really had the licensing. So what happens in the event of catasrophy and all paperwork is lost? *********************************************** This Weeks Sponsor: Wyse Technologies Get a free whitepaper on how to secure your corporate data from Wyse.
