If you want to have it all, you should use SecureCopy.

I once copied about 40 GB (about 15000 files with shares, security etc)

File ownership isn't an issue for us so Robocopy should do just fine.

You can run robocopy with the /secfix switch which will take everyting but
owner then you run chown on it and make the admin owner of everything

Not if you have a directory containing 1000 files with varying file
ownerships.

While I agree robocopy is good for keeping multiple shares in sync, it is
terrible if you care about the ACL's since it trashes the owner information.
You will notice this especially if you have any ACL's based on CREATOR
OWNER.

The best way to do this is to simply use NTBACUP. And, if you are on
Windows 2000, you don't even need a tape drive.

use a setowner script or subinacl.exe to take care of the owner issue.

Except that object ownership will be lost.

I've just had a play with robocopy and it looks as if it will do everything
I need (apart from migrating shares and I've got regedit for that). Thanks

Use robocopy to copy the files there is an option with robocopy to bring
over share/file and folder permissions with it using a /secfix

Sorry about the OT post. I have just installed a new NAS system and am
shortly going to start consolidating all of my various fileservers onto it.
Once I move the files onto the NAS, they'll inherit default permissions for
the folder they are going into, correct? I therefore need to restore the
proper permissions once the files have been moved.

I remember seeing a very elegant batch file ages ago that would generate a
permissions list (using CACLS) of all files then later parse the list and
reapply the relevant permissions. Does anyone know where I can obtain this
file now? I seem to have lost my copy.

Regards
Angus
