I went to ftp.symantec.com and have the following question:
what's the difference btween symcdefsi32.exe and symcdefsi321.exe?

I have Corporate Edition version 8.0

Many thanks for that. It should save me a load of time.

Sample defsgetter.bat:

ftp -s:c:\cescript.txt
call "%systemdrive%\symcdefsi32.exe" /q
del /q %systemdrive%\symcdefsi32.exe

And here is the cescript.txt that the .bat calls:

open ftp.symantec.com
anonymous
joe@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
cd
public/english_us_canada/antivirus_definitions/norton_antivirus/static
lcd C:\
bin
prompt
get symcdefsi32.exe
quit

Schedule via AT.

Do you happen to have the ftp site address handy? I've only ever been
able to find the daily updates on http. Regards Angus

For as long as I can remember, Symantec has put out LiveUpdate
definitions ONLY on WEDNESDAY's. This is on their website. They ONLY
release a LiveUpdate version when there is a MAJOR virus outbrake, such
as MyDoom, and previous viruses such as Nimda.

However, EVERY DAY they put out an intelligent updater with revised
Definitions as necessary. This is available via FTP. Symantec has a
few sample scripts to download this, but it's just a text file and a
.bat file which has FTP.EXE call the text file to run unattended. Anyone
can write their own script. I don't recall the time they release it,
but it is always published at the same time each day.

I think Symantec should build an automatic download of the Inteligent
Updater into the Corporate/Enterprise products, because these
environments should be updated daily and not have to wait for the Wed
update or a major outbreak, but until they do that, all you have to do
is schedule the FTP download with AT on your parent server(s) and it
will push down to every sub-server and client.

So anyways, Symantec DOES have an update every day, you just have to
schedule to get it yourself. DO NOT rely on LiveUpdate. Most admins
who have used NAV CE/Enterprise over the years know about this and have
know about this, and they are getting daily updated.

And FWIW, SAV 8.1 Corp/Enterprise work just fine on Win2003, and have
since Win2003 came out, and since 8.1 came out, which was prior to the
gold release of 2003 Server.

While this is true, I have found the same case. It seems as if the
quality of Symantec's AV products are becoming more and more useless. I
have permanently made the switch to Trend Micro AV products (which I was
a big proponent of Symantec AV products). I just finished moving a
friends network from SAV 8.0 CE to Trend Micro
OfficeScan/ServerProtect/ScanMail,
all controlled from the Trend Micro Control Manager. A very nice tool.
All access via HTTP. Reporting is SO much better than SAV. Version 3.0
of TMCM is supposed to be so much better, and better reporting
capabilities, and work on Windows Server 2003 (to be released Feb 16).

There is a LiveUpdate from 9 February, but we have the same concerns
here.=3D20 However, Symantec offers two update mechanisms: "LiveUpdate"
and "Intelligent Updater". They write on their website: "LiveUpdate
definitions are updated weekly, except for major outbreaks, when
definitions are updated more often [...] Intelligent Updater is updated
daily during the work week." (look at
