Better to buy a player locally. Region-free players can be picked up from
£30 upwards.

You shouldn't have any problems with PAL/NTSC (as long as the TV doesn't
still run on valves) I can happily watch Region 1 DVD's on my Sony and they
are NTSC encoded. The problem might be with power, we run 240V AC over
here.

Nah, the Yanks who's other halves are trying to convince us to transfer to
the UK are going UH, NO!!! :P Seriously, with all that I have seen in this
thread, it has really made me think about limiting my exposure over there to
business trips only. Between the driving on the opposite side of the road,
the drivers seat on the other side of the car (I can just *see* me now...
Uh... Oh, wrong door), and the TV considerations.... And no NFL!? Wot? Ok,
Arsenal ROCKS, but it ain't pigskin! I have a question about the TV
licensing and formats though... Would my DVDs and Xbox games work over
there? I know there's an issue with PAL/NTSC, but I don't know what
countries it affects (that being said, I believe it depends more on your TV
and such.. Wonder what the shipping would be on a big screen HDTV!) And if
that's all I had hooked up to it, would the licensing still be an issue?

Curiouser and curiouser!! :) My husband is European, and has pushed the
issue a bit to relocate to England, as we have a big office there, and
satelittes all over EMEA. And since I provide a lot of global support
anyways, sometimes it makes sense. I have yet to even visit over there,
though. Hopefully next year.

I seem to recall that a lodger would only need their own license if their
room has a lock on the door, which effectively makes it a self contained
dwelling.

The TV license is actually for the "household". You can have as many TVs as
you like as loong as they 3are used by members of your family at one
address. Lodgers need their own licenses.

I used to see TV Detector vans roaming the streets, bristling with aerials
to find unlicensed TVs. Since moving to the country I haven't seen one.
Maybe they use satellite tracking these days.

Exactly... Freedom of speech and of the press, Besides if I had to pay a tax
on each of the 6 TVs in my house I think I would lead the revolt on
Washington myself. Instead of tea in the harbor it'd be Zenith's on the
lawn.

As I understand it, in england ALL receivers must be licensed. Unlike the
U.S. where there are no restrictions on the Reception of broadcasts, and all
taxes and fees are levied at only broadcasters, in englad you must have a
license to own a receiver.

Here in the U.S. if a signal is being broadcast it is legal and acceptable
to receive it and there are no restrictions on receiving a signal. There
may be restrictions on the Decryption of the signal as covered by the DMCA,
but the actual reception is not controlled.

The catch in the US being that ANYTHING that generates an RF signal counts
as a transmitter and thus must be licensed by the FCC. SO almost any
electronics has to have an FCC approval before it can be sold.

It ties into the US policy of freedom of the press and speech.

Thanks, all, for your input. I knew I could count on this list for
information and entertainment!

So, to sum up:

1. I should expect 40% of my salary to be taken by the government, maybe
more, as I am a foreign national. (Thanks for the salary calculator,
Jeremy. That's handy.)
2. Buy a car over there, preferably a beater, until I get used to being
on the wright side of the road. The car allowance will probably be taxed as
income.
3. Stay away or close to the Essex women. Gotta watch out for those
stilletto's.
4. License for the TV. I had heard about that my last trip over.
5. Find a place near a tube stop.
6. No hunting with dogs, cigarettes or guns. (whew!)
7. Be sure to do the social things with the team, pubs, etc.
8. Don't be wary of the fags.
9. oh, and I'll be watched on camera's all the time. Even those lonely
nights.....

I'm quite excited about this new adventure. I certainly hope my permit
comes through. God bless the Queen!

Spencer
