Websense offers a product that works great from stopping ad based
applications, Client Application Manager. Centralized management, able
to audit software, and customized levels of restriction.

I would agree with you on being overly restrictive. It seems a more
realistic process to monitor what does go on and then prevent the known
bad
stuff.

After doing that for a while in a stable environment you will also have
a
good list of the known software; if you really want to lock everything
down
you can then switch it around and allow the known to run and nothing
else.
Even then, you will need to be ready to extend the good list at the drop
of
a hat.

We are not on 2003 yet so my answer is no. However I've read out in the
wild
and here on this list that these policies tend to be too restrictive and
people are having to disable it.

Jim,

I am really curious as to whether or not the new Microsoft Software
Restriction Policies have been used to successfully lock down a Windows
2003
Terminal Server. The article makes specific reference to the use of
these
new policies to block the execution of unauthorized "user installed"
code.
Are you using these new polices on your Citrix servers?

Cheers,

Bernd,
I remember I posted this same link sometime last year asking the same
question only for XP. : ) I believe these policies are in XP Embedded
also
and I just signed off on a new image for us on 200 more NetX's that uses
these policies as part of it.

Once we start getting them out to our branches I'll let you know how it
goes.

Jim Kenzig
