Neil,=20 Except the whole issue of both paging and virtual memory swap is = predicated on RAM being at a premium. RAM has been cheap and abundant for a long = time. If pre-emptive paging tasks are still ideal for overall system = performance (counter intuitive- but I can accept that it may be necessary) the = option to do them in RAM is really quite logical. So, if you are running as system = and you are quite sure that you have 1 or 2 GB (!!) of RAM free there really ought to be a way to put the solid state response times of RAM to work = for "required" paging activitie. I say don't be too cautious - you are very right to raise the question, = Ron, and to consider this. Without people raising the questions, the debate and the answers never = come. It's an interesting thought - and I think with TS being a fairly = specific use of the OS, and with caveats, it could be of use. Especially if using anything that could manage and trap anything romping out of control with = RAM use. It's just a shame that for quite specific use, you can't change / = configure the VM rationale to be more like the swapping rationale. In general, for a general purpose OS, I think the paging rationale is = the only one that can likely make sense, it'd just be nice to have the = choice, when doing specific things and wanting the best performance.
