I spoke to Microsoft about this kind of scenario and they said:
When accessing Office XP through TS you need an Office XP license for
each device, exceptions are second laptop, kiosk or single use PC.

When accessing from home you must have a license for Office XP at home
that is same version(XP), edition (Std), channel (open volume) as
installed on the server.

I know for a fact they couldn't. I tried and failed.

In exchange2k3, they now offer per user licensing - so one license, one
user regardless of how many different devices. I have no doubts they
will offer the same thing for office, especially since they are moving
towards having a server-based collaboration system which encompasses
office as well.

Not that I would ever advise anybody to break there EULA, and I
definitely wouldn't break my own EULA, but the per-user model makes
sense to me and I think is the only viable solution - MS will have to
take it, or they will pretty much write office out of the thin client
equation.
