[THIN] Modem Attached to Server?

We've got a Sage app which needs a modem attached to the server in order to
run some sort of test, which should then open up another section of the app.
Besides the ridiculousness of attaching a modem in this day and age, would
this work? Is it simply a case of attaching the modem and having the server
detect it?
Win2k3 with MPS3..
