Something that you seriously consider is getting a dual processor machine. According to the TS literature I've read, such a machine can handle twice as many users as a single processor machine. Also, with a dual processor machine, you don't really need to get the latest and greatest CPU. In fact, for the size of the installation you mention, a 1 GHz dual processor machine can definitely do the job. At one of my sites, I have a single 1.8 GHz machine running TS, DNS, that also functions as a file server, DC, tape backup, etc., for about 10 users and it works great. The only two things it is not running is IIS and DHCP (DHCP in a 10-user environment is not only a waste of computer resources but, more importantly, a waste of my management time). Security, of course, is another issue. Anyway, that's my $1.50 (used to be $0.02, but inflation has been factored in). Scenario - typical small client.... DC file server running win2k, DNS, DHCP, Norton AV CE, Veritas BE8.6, diskeeper. They don't want to invest in a separate server for TS access for the 5-10 employees (low volume use). If I install TS in app mode, I would now need to install office and any programs they need for the 10 users to access. I see the security risk if open due to the files being on the server and not thru a share to another data server, but technically (beyond the security), this can be done? I am trying to find the answer to many clients I am pitching this thin client idea when they say, can I do this all on a single server rather than two. Thanks for the insight. I get spoiled at the main office here running 5 servers with different duties...but when many clients ask what I think is pushing the limits, they want proof. If a client with 5-10 employees want to run Win2k TS and thin clients, can they do this on their main win2k server? I usually recommend minimum 2 servers - one for TS and another for their main server to hold data, nav, backup etc. Can a single server running in app mode - be able to handle 10 users plus, norton av ce, veritas backup exec and misc. other programs? =20 *********************************************** This Weeks Sponsor: Wyse Technologies Get a free whitepaper on how to secure your corporate data from Wyse.
