Hmm, interesting. The path I mentioned before is where a policy stores
the information. The path you list under Winlogon, shouldn't be messed
with.=20

I would once again question your developer as to what they plan to do
with that Dir for your users. In general, that folder is left out of
roaming profiles to speed up login times, if you start including it,
your users could suffer, 5 - 20 minute load times. (I have seen 20 min
load times in extreme cases, it's highly annoying)

If all they are putting in there is not user specific, and can be
scripted into the profile on logins, then you shouldn't need to worry
about this regkey. If not, then I would look into your build
documentation to see where your policies are coming from for your users.

There is of course always the possibility that your site used to use
policies, and some users profiles have never been updated from the time
that you stopped using policies. NT 4.0 policies are a pain to remove
from user profiles. In some cases, the easiest way is to delete and
recreate each user profile, without the restrictions.=20

Not knowing the full extent of your environment however, removing
policies from your user profiles could cause many other problems. So I'd
be careful, and test out all changes on temp or test users first.=20

My $.02

I found that in a couple locations.

Current user, local machine, users.

Each time under software\microsoft\windowsnt\currentversion\winlogon=20

So what do I do with it? How do I stop that from happening, now that I
know
that it is?

More specifically Chad, if you go to regedit from one of your TS
servers. Go to HKEY_users, select the SID of a standard user, and go to:

HKEY_USERS\(user - SID string)\software\policies\windows\system

You will see the subkey 'excludedprofiledirs' which should list 'local
settings'.

Are you Win2k TS, or Nt 4.0 TSE?

When you look at your currently loaded profiles on your TS server. At
the root of a standard user profile. Do you see a file called,
Ntuser.pol?

If yes, you are applying user based policies, and are using the afore
mentioned policy setting to decrease the overall size of your roaming
profiles. (it helps with shorting the load times)

If you're Win2k, right click the OU where your TS servers are, and look
for a policy. If you're TSE, as an admin, load up poledit from the
server, select 'open registry', select 'local computer', expand
'network', expand 'system policies update', highlight 'remote update',
and look for any path settings. This process is used to redirect an NT
4.0 based machine to a manual policy path.=3D3D3D20

Are you applying group policies to this installation?

The option of 'excluded directories from roaming profiles' by default
contains the 'local settings' folder.

On the TS servers, I do see a local settings folder for those profiles
which
are created on that server.

What I don't see, is a local settings folder in the
\\server\homedirs\%username% TS home directory.

I am viewing hidden and do not see it.

Apparently, according to the developer, .NET stores it's info in the
local
settings\application data\application history folder.

Your roaming profiles should have that folder, but it's hidden, so make
sure you're able to view hidden files.=3D3D3D3D3D3D20

If your app needs to write info to that location. I guess my question
is. Why? And What does it store there?

Essentially you're saying that the app needs to write info to a users
profile before it will work for that user. Are these temp files, or
settings files that control how the user sees the application?

Apps that need to write to local profiles can be pains sometimes, mostly
because you will need to find a way to script in the files needed to run
the app to the users profile on login to the TS servers.=3D3D3D3D3D3D20

Technically though, running apps with info from the 'local settings'
folder is fine though, as your end users will have all the rights they
need to access those files.=3D3D3D3D3D3D20

This is being brought up as our developers are writing a new app.. in
.NET.

Apparently .NET uses the Local Settings folder extensively.

Anyone fill me in on how I can work with this, as my Roaming profiles
have
no Local Settings folder.

We use roaming profiles, and I have a developer asking the following
question.

Can someone help me explain it?

I guess what I am trying to ask is that when an app requires
information to
be put into the <Local Profile>\Local Settings folder, where does it go
when
running through Citrix?
