CTX103015 - IMA Service Fails on MFPrintss.dll

This document was published at:
http://support.citrix.com/kb/entry.jspa?externalID=CTX103015

Document ID: CTX103015, Created on: Dec 2, 2003, Updated: Sep 28, 2004

Products: Citrix MetaFrame XP 1.0 for Microsoft Windows 2000

Symptoms

The IMA service experiences a fatal error. Note that the Start and Stop tabs
under Services in Independent Management Architecture are grayed out and
inactive.

The following error message appears:

?The Independent Management Architecture service did not start in a timely
fashion.?

Cause

The IMA service is unable to start due to a problem loading one of its
subsystems. The actual plugin in this case is MfPrintSs.dll and will be
showing as the value for ?CurrentlyLoadingPlugin?.

To reproduce the issue, you can make the following changes in the registry
which will cause the IMA service to hang.

WARNING! This requires you to edit the registry. Using Registry Editor
incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall
your operating system. Citrix cannot guarantee that problems resulting from
the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at
your own risk.

Navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Citrix\IMA\RUNTIME
Value Type: Reg_SZ
Value Name: CurrentlyLoadingPlugin
Value: MfPrintSs.dll

Change the values to the following:

Value Type: Reg_Multi_SZ
Value Name: ProductPlugins
Value: MfPrintSs.dll (only this value)

Resolution

Install Citrix Hotfix XE103W2K016 and restart the server. The Independent
Management Architecture service now starts correctly. This hotfix replaces
files used by the MfPrint subsystem.

Ensure any non-native drivers are not installed on the server. Citrix
support may ask that such drivers be removed for troubleshooting purposes.
