Bernd, My concern would be the impact the JRE engine actually has on the performance of the system given the amount of memory it consumes and also I seem to recall a java app can only run in a single thread or is this pooh ! Don't do much Java anymore so not sure about the threading issue but have seen JRE consume lot's of (virtual) memory obviously causing system performance drop off's. If there's a way to protect the JRE environment from excessive memory usage that would be neat IMHO - guess the answer from your list below if pushed would be 2 Mark _____ From: Bernd Harzog [mailto:berndh@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: 11 January 2005 16:01 To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Java Based Tools On Citrix Servers - OK, or Not? Folks, I am working with a small company that is going to be doing some good work in the performance management area for Citrix servers. Their existing agent which runs as a service on each Citrix server is written in Java. This of course requires the presence of a JRE to support their service. I know that everyone hates having to publish Java based applications on their Citrix boxes due to the fact that Java application consume so much memory. My question is, "Do you care about a service written in Java (where there is only ever one instance), or does your fear and loathing of Java applications extend to potential Java management tools as well? Please let me know with a simple response like: 1. If it delivers value, I do not care what it is written in. 2. The fact that it is in Java is a concern, and it will depend upon the value vs. the resources consumed. 3. Over my dead body will a Java thing go on my Citrix boxes. If you want to elaborate on your rationale that would be most appreciated as well. Thanks, Bernd Harzog CEO Applications Performance Management Experts www.apmexperts.com bernd.harzog@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx
