SA = subscription advantage. All SA means (in brief) is that you have full rights to upgrade your current Citrix software to the latest versions without additional costs to you. IE - a base install of MF XPe and all connection licenses can be updated to MF XP FR2 with all licenses, with no hassles from citrix. ICA and RDP can run fine on the same server, there is however a slight amount of memory set aside in listening state then for both connection types. RDP clients don't use Citrix licenses. Only MS based licenses. Citrix only cares about ICA based connections to your servers. It is not easy to load balance RDP connections at this point in time. .NET should make this easier. Citrix still wins the 'ease of configuration' award for me. Wyse often puts out firmware updates that can allow other connection types. I personally haven't seen a wyse that didn't have RDP built into it, but then I havn't seen all the wyse out there. You may find an update package on their site to allow RDP from your old terminals. Why ICA over RDP? . . . MS is certainly narrowing the gap of the features that Citrix can provide over MS's terminal services, but here's the short round up of items that still hold some sway (at least in my mind): - ica bandwidth is certainly smaller on the wire then RDP connections - ica screen refresh and performance is still better than RDP connections, on both LAN and WAN setups. - Citrix's printing management and control features with Meta XP is reproducible with other software, but still better than 3rd party stuff, and anything native to MS TS services. - load balancing is 'easy' with citrix, harder to implement with other solutions - Direct application access, as opposed to a full desktop isn't always needed but can be very useful. Bottom line, look at where MS is going with .Net, and see if it fits in with how you envision your company's network changing in the next few years. If it fits, bag paying for extending your SA, and begin phasing citrix out of your organization. I hate licensing. Is it possible to run ica and rdp on the same server? Second, is it possible to run ica and rdp on the same server to avoid purchasing a citrix license for each rdp client (my gut reaction is that I would need a seperate rdp farm)? Citrix is making me nervous with their Microsoft-like licensing behavior. I got a call because our SA is up for renewal and they promptly told me if I didn't renew it I wouldn't be able to do it later -- I would have to buy all new licenses. At least that's the way I understood what he was saying.... The only thing I use Citrix for is load-balancing and the ICA protocol for a slew of older Wyse boxes (90 of them) that don't support RDP. I hate to keep SA when all of the new features they offer don't mean anything to my 'duh' Wyse boxes (greater colors, nfuse, etc). If I don't keep SA, then I will gradually be getting out-dated which may mean something when I end up buying new thinclients (right now I still have 30 on the shelf I bought used). If it wasn't for the insanely cheap price I got these Wyse boxes for ($20/each), I don't know if I could have justified Citrix over MS/RDP the first time around. If I'm only using Citrix for load-balancing and the ICA protocol (all on a LAN), what other advantages am I getting from Citrix and why would I want SA? I guess I'm having a hard time justifying the SA when RDP offers the basics. (I think I'm losing my (citrix) religion....) If I want to run both RDP and ICA without buying citrix licenses for the RDP clients, do I have to run two seperate farms? -=-=-=-=-=- Chris Wood 801-489-2097 - Wencor - Kitco - Dixie Aerospace -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ********************************************** This weeks sponsor 99Point9.com 99Point9 helps solve your unresolved technical server-based questions, issues and incidents. http://www.99point9.com *********************************************** For Archives, to Unsubscribe, Subscribe or set Digest or Vacation mode use the below link. http://thethin.net/citrixlist.cfm ********************************************** This weeks sponsor 99Point9.com 99Point9 helps solve your unresolved technical server-based questions, issues and incidents. http://www.99point9.com *********************************************** For Archives, to Unsubscribe, Subscribe or set Digest or Vacation mode use the below link. http://thethin.net/citrixlist.cfm
