I had this experience at a customer site a couple weeks ago. The servers were very close but the RAID controller was completely different. Once I tried to boot, I got a blue screen. Used the Windows 2003 CD and repaired the install. To my surprise it not only fix the issue but also, it did NOT touch anything on the registry for the apps. Everything booted and worked PERFECTLY. My issue then was the RAID itself that was in RAID 1+0 on the original server but on RAID 1 on the new. Just used NTBACKUP after the server was up and saved it to a file on the network. Changed the RAID (what destroyed everything) and again used the 2003 CD but now I used ASR (new feature on 2003) and its floppy to reload the image off the network! VERY impressive. The server was restored in 20 minutes and working perfectly. Amazing. Check the ASR. Gives you a floppy that you use with the 2003 CD to restore a server from an image on any fileserver you may have or from a tape. Impressive. And yes you must rename/remove from the domain and run NewSID from sysinternals.com before connecting the clone to the network. -----Original Message----- From: Greg Reese [mailto:GReese@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: January 21, 2004 11:39 AM To: thin@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [THIN] Ghosting Windows 2003 I am adding a server to my farm. An IBM x335. My existing servers are two IBM x330 and an IBM Netfinity 7000. The 335 is already installed and running with Windows 2003 and Metaframe XPa FR3. I have some users testing it and it may get a few more tweaks, but otherwise it is all set. If I ghost it and restore the image onto the x330 servers, will it recognize and fix the hardware differences? They are not that different but there are differences. Then I am assuming there needs to be some renaming etc before I plug them back into the network. They will be keeping their old windows 2000 names. I am just trying to get them running on Windows 2003 and I really don't feel like re-installing everything by hand three more times. Am I out of my mind with this approach or is this possible? Thanks!
