[THIN] Re: FW: Terminal Services Licensing for Clients Attached to a WorkGroup

Hi - thanks for your response.

The clients are running Windows XP Pro and are using RDP to connect to the
TS.
It is a simple domain network connecting through a 3com switch.
A broadband router is used for internet access.
The new server is the first TS on the network.

Cormac

Whether the clients are members of the domain or a workgroup has no
influence on TS licensing, nor does the location of the user accounts.
I understand that these clients are not issued a permanent license. I
assume that the TS runs W2K, correct? There are several possible causes
for this:

* which OS are the clients running? If they are *not* running W2K
Professional or XP Pro, they need a purchased TS CAL
* have these clients previously connected to another TS and received a
TS CAL from another TS Licensing Server? Somtimes there's a problem to
renew a TS CAL issued by another LS.
* what kind of network connection is there between the clients and the
Terminal Server? There might be a "black hole router" somewhere between
the TS and the clients, which blocks packets above a certain size. This
can prevent the transfer of the permanent TS CAL to the client.

If this is the problem, you have to change the MTU size. Check the
Terminal Services FAQ, there are 2 items about this under "Connectivity"

Subject: [THIN] FW: Terminal Services Licensing for Clients
Attached to a WorkGroup

        Hello,

I have two users on a site that require access to an old
application server.

In order to keep them networked to the old server they are
WorkGroup members and have temporary Terminal Service Licenses.

Another 5 users are part of the new domain (Windows 2000 Server)
and have correct Terminal Services License Tokens.

Is there anyway of keeping the users as members of the WorkGroup
and giving them permanent TS Licenses?

        Thanks for your help.

        Kind Regards

        Regards

        Cormac
