Citrix Modifies Portal Licensing

Citrix Systems this week changed the licensing structure of its NFuse
Elite portal server from a named-user to a concurrent-user model.

The move brings NFuse Elite's licensing in line with Citrix's
flagship MetaFrame application delivery software, which is sold on a
concurrent-user basis, said David Manks, senior director of product
marketing at Citrix, Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Citrix adopted a named-user model for NFuse Elite when it launched
the product last June because portal products from other vendors were
typically sold that way, Manks said.

However, customers and channel partners asked Citrix to switch NFuse
Elite over to concurrent-user licensing to better integrate license
management with MetaFrame, he said.

Several solution providers applauded the switch.

"[NFuse Elite's named-user licensing model] wasn't necessarily a
showstopper, but it made people unhappy," said Mark Segars, director
of the consulting group at Bayshore Technologies, a solution provider
based in Tampa, Fla.

The licensing change should also encourage customers to extend the
use of their Citrix portals beyond internal users to customers and
partners as well, said John Arnold, president of Datalan, a White
Plains, NY-based solution provider.

"If you have to name users with partners and customers, it becomes
prohibitive," Arnold said.

With the switch, pricing for NFuse Elite changes to $145 per
concurrent user, compared to $67 per named user.

Pricing includes Subscription Advantage, Citrix's software upgrade
program.

Citrix estimates customers will need one concurrent user license for
every four named users.

For existing NFuse Elite customers that migrate to concurrent user
licensing, Citrix is extending a one-time offer of one concurrent
user license for each named license at no charge.

Existing MetaFrame customers can purchase NFuse Elite for a
discounted price of $109 per concurrent user license until June 15.
