Hi Rob, hi Rick

O.K., just tested the new versions in our test lab:
The orginal piab2.adm error in gpmc report was
...
is not in a valid format and must be replaced. Details: A string is =
expected
at line 372. ...

The second version that you Rob send me directly brought the error:

is not in a valid format and must be replaced. Details: A string is =
expected
at line 377.

The third version from the hyperlink below already crashed when trying =
to
import the adm-file in AD: following error occured in line 371: Error 62 =
The
corresponding string was not found in the |strings| section

Found: !!Notepad_HelpPOLICY

The file can not be loaded.

Hope that feedback helps in further converting activities of piab2.adm.

Hi Daniel,

Sorry. Just read my own email, must have been tired.

I should have said:

On PIAB2.ADM, line 372 refers to !!notepad_value. Edit the adm file and
replace !!notepad_value with "!!notepad_value"( put double quotes =3D =
around).

Edit the GPO, go to administrative templates, select add/remove =3D =
templates
and add PIAB@.ADM (you'll need to navigate to wherever it is). Now right
click on administrative templates again, select filtering, untick "only =
=3D
show policy settings that can be fully managed".

PIAB@.ADM will now work. Promise ;-)

Rick

Daniel:

I finished my tests with GPMC on an english Windows XP looking on my
(mostly) english DC AD.
Same error:
The following errors were encountered:
The .adm file
"\\DEMA0S001.b.group\SysVol\b.group\Policies\{DF81E9F8-AAF3-4F12-9884-0B6=

Details: A string is expected at line 372.

Also tested in our test lab (only english DCs)
Same error !
You only have to activate 1 policy of piab an GPMC will report the =3D =
error.

Than I read what Rick wrote. That sounds very interesting.
And now the important question:

Have anybody already typed all these quotes around the "!!notes" so that =
=3D I
don't have todo it myself. BTW I am not so familiar with gpo-adm's and =
=3D
don't really know where to put the quotes exactly.

Hope anybody could update the piab2.adm and send it to Jim, that he =3D =
could
put it in the download area !

Hi Daniel...

Thank you for clarifying your setup. I believe that your problem is not
related to the other issue being discussed, where .adm files designed =
=3D for
Windows 2000 may fail when used against a Windows 2003 Active Directory
domain.

You do not have a Windows 2003 Active Directory domain so you should not =
=3D
be affected by this issue. Your problem is with the actual GPMC program =
on
=3D the management console you are using, and/or the domain you are =
querying,
=3D and doesn't seem to be related to .adm issues. (Remember the GPMC =
is only
=3D an alternate interface to manage group policy, it is not the group =
policy
itself).

Your problem may be that the operating system language (for at least =3D =
some
of your domain controllers) is a different language than GPMC, and so =
you
require QFE 326469.

My recommendation to you is to go back to your original installation of =
=3D
GPMC on W2K XP Professional SP1 German, install QFE 326469, and report =
back
=3D to us on the list.

To obtain QFE 326469, refer to article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=3D3Dkb;en-us;326469 (link =
=3D may
wrap) and call Microsoft. There will be no charge for the hotfix =3D =
provided
you tell the initial contact that you require this hotfix to resolve the
problem described in the article.

(BTW, I googled "326469 gpmc download" and found two third-party =3D =
download
locations... as this is a management console utility only you may want =
=3D to
take this risk.)

Using W2K XP Pro will eliminate both the Windows 2003 interaction, and =
=3D the
other possible source of your problem which is an issue with your VMWare
installation. Once you have this working on W2K XP Pro, you could try
putting the GPMC on Windows Server 2003 (including QFE 326469) and let =
=3D us
know how that goes.

Kind regards...

Frith
