Hi, It's quite p[ossible with either NT 4.0 TSE or win2k. NT 4.0 TSE is a special case so I'll discuss that first. The NT 4.0 TSE implementation of per-user file associations, enabled by the command "peruser /enable", results in a gross inflation of a users profiles (ntuser.dat) since the whole of the HKLM\Software\Clases key is replicated in each users profile under HKCU\Software\Classes. This can result in user profile registry sizes of 1.8 to 2.5 MB which can have a severe effect on the number of users you can support on a system before you max out the registry. Per user instances of the HKCU\Software\Classes can work without impact, eg. the outlook forms fix for for NT 4.0 TSE and Office 2000 (see technote Q249965) but overall, unless you're willing to wear less users per server and slower logon/logoff times, per-user file association should probably be avoided. Win2k is a completely different beast. Per-user file associations are always enabled. If you run up regedt32 and look at the keys under HKEY_USERS, you'll see keys with the user's SID and a second key with _classes extension. This _classes hive is linked to HKCU\Software\Classes. However there is no operating system level way to populate the users' HKCU\Software\Classes key. So if you want per-user file associations, you'll have to do it using scripting or regfiles. For example, we had a customer who didn't want everyone to have access to office, so if you weren't in the office users group, your .doc, .ppt, .xls file associations were redirected to the appropriate office product viewer using a simple regfile that patched HKCU\Software\Classes. Does anyone have some input on this or did I not search long enough in the archives?
