Ok...latest update....
Resolved that DCOM for Excel works if I configure it to run using the
Administrator user identity within the DCOM config tool. Not the ideal
scenario but I'm hoping that will offer some insight to those of you in the
know.
I'm still open to ideas/suggestions....

Robert

Alos have began experiencing problems with Internet Explorer such that
hyperlinks to local intranet pages do not work. When clicking on a some (not
all) hyperlinks nothing happens. No errors and no page opens. I'm concerned
that this may be related to the DCOM problems I am having.
Fortunately , I've moved all clients to my backup terminal server.

Thanks!

Hi Robert,

Either the relevant key has been deleted or something has changed the access
permissions so that ordinary users can't access the key. Normally ole
registration will re-create a missing key, provided users have appropriate
acces permissions to HKCR. However on win2k if you don't select NT 4.0
compatibility mode during the server build, then access rights could be a
problem.

Anyway if the key is missing:

Log on to one of your "good" (no broken excel ole) servers, run regedit and
export the key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{0C0A3666-30C9-11D0-8F20-00805F2CD064}

To a reg file.

Now run the regfile on the broken server. Make sure access permissions are
okay (use regedt32 > security > permissions.

Hi,

You'll get this error in a few different scenarios. The first is obvious,
when the file isn't where the OLE registration entry is pointing, or access
is denied to the file. Another reason can be that the user hasn't got
appropriate right access to the subkey under CLSID used for the OLE
registration process.

Check the security/owner of the key
Hkey_classes_root\CLSID\{0C0A3666-30C9-11D0-8F20-00805F2CD064}.

Some DCOM errors, not yours unfortunately, can also be cured as per Q187146.

Subject: [THIN] Dcom Errors Galore

Many of my programs use the Excel COM objects and have been working great
for months if not years. Recently however all my thin client users on only
one of my terminal servers are experiencing errors like the following:

Unable to start a DCOM Server: {0C0A3666-30C9-11D0-8F20-00805F2CD064} as /.
The error:

"The system cannot find the file specified. "

Happened while starting this command:

C:\WINNT\System32\MDM.EXE -Embedding

I have considered long file names vs.8.3 filenames to no avail. Also made
some attempts at DCOMCNFG with no success.

That leaves me once again to look to you guys for some insight as I have
reached the end of my rope on this one. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.
