Well, doesn't it always happen that when you write out a query, you solve
the problem.
Client has some funky user rights defined. Namely, the permission to
"manage auditing and security log" has been removed from local
Administrators. Add this back in - and now it works just fine.
Thanks to Web for replying - he was on the right track!
